We were so intrigued by the Yelp review of Boke Bowl that we posted earlier this week, that we had to go check it out for ourselves. For those of you who don’t remember the review (but really, how could you forget?), a comedic Yelper compared the dining experience at Boke Bowl to all things Ryan Gosling (including having sex with him). So, is this fairly new restaurant as hot and steamy as the beloved actor? We think so.
Boke Bowl was originally a pop-up shop, but has since transitioned into a popular brick-and-mortar spot in the SE Industrial District. As with most Portland restaurants, this isn’t just a ramen joint, it’s ramen with a Pacific Northwest twist. If you’re a stickler for authenticity, you might want to go elsewhere, but if you delight in unique takes on old classics, Boke Bowl might just be your new favorite place. Though they have various delicious-sounding options like Korean fried chicken, Brussels sprouts salad, and steam buns, we ordered the ramen. Vegan caramelized fennel ramen, to be exact. The broth was mellow and smooth, not unlike the feminist “Hey, Girl” meme of Ryan that’s taken the internet by storm. For those of you who are looking to spice things up a bit, a la the rainy dock scene in The Notebook, drizzle on some complimentary hot sauce or add their cornmeal-crusted oysters (aphrodisiac alert!) to your bowl.
Seriously though, all Ryan Gosling sex jokes aside, Boke Bowl is worth checking out. They have something for everyone, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.
