Portland music lady, Kingsley, released her EP last month and we’ve been more than impressed. We got the sit down with her to discuss life, music and her music. The next performance is on Sunday, the 15th at Portland Saturday Market. Make sure to RSVP & watch this beauty perform magic.
EYES & EDGE: Who inspired you to get into music in the first place?
KINGSLEY: I grew up with music, my great grandma was in the Chicago gospel scene, my dad was involved with a local Chicago-house record label, and my mom was a singer in the church… I don’t think it was a single person that inspired me to get in music, it was more like being involved with music made me feel like me. Either listening to it and singing along, or belting Disney in the shower, or singing in church/school choir, I felt like myself doing music and wanted to spend my entire life in a world revolving around it. By 3rd or 4th grade after winning a talent show singing Fallin’ by Alicia Keys, I figured out I could do that by becoming a pop singer, and thus my crave for the music world came in full swing.
E&E: Who is involved in your dream collaboration?
KINGSLEY: Dream collab would def be Rhianna, oh-my-lanta, I am getting goosebumps just thinking about working with her!
E&E: What do you want your listeners to feel when they hear your music?
KINGSLEY: This is a tough question, I think, I would say, I want my listeners to feel understood when they listen to my music – if they couldn’t make sense of or find the words to something they are going through I have a song that captures it all. I want them to feel like I did when I was writing it and by the end of the song the world makes sense again, while they are deep in thought on my lyrics, they will have an insanely danceable beat to process everything else too!
E&E: If you were given the chance to make three wishes, what would they be?
KINGSLEY: Wish 1, pay off all student loan debt! Wish 2, have my music circulating globally!! Wish, be able to eat an endless supply of Chipotle & Skittles without getting fat!!!
E&E: What is the meaning behind your upcoming EP?
KINGSLEY: I Am Becuase I Am mean it really a statement I am making. I am Kingsley, I am who I am, and unapologetic, that’s that. There is no trying to tell me how to look or act or be, especially how I make my music. Simply put, this is me and if you don’t like it F-off!
